The “Survey on the Application Status of Coatings in Chinese Furniture Companies” was jointly initiated by Covestro and Sina Home Furnishings, and issued a survey questionnaire note 1 to benchmark large and medium-sized furniture companies nationwide. The main survey results are as follows:
Mid-to-high-end environmentally friendly furniture is increasingly favored, and consumers are willing to pay for high-quality
In daily operations, Chinese furniture companies face challenges from all sides, and fierce market competition is considered the most serious problem (63%). This has also prompted more and more furniture companies to begin to seek breakthroughs and transformations. Nearly two-thirds of the surveyed large and medium-sized furniture companies have transferred more than 50% of their production operations to the mid- to high-end furniture market, which is dominated by solid wood manufacturing. According to the survey results, almost all furniture companies believe that consumers are willing to pay higher prices for better appearance and durability. In actual sales, nearly 90% of furniture companies will introduce the quality and differences of coatings to consumers. It can be seen that under the new market structure, large and medium-sized enterprises have used product material innovation and differentiation as a weapon to seize the commanding heights of the market, in order to strive for preemptive market effects.

The upgrading of coating technology is unstoppable, and manufacturers prefer two-component water-based paints
For the purpose of enterprise transformation and upgrading and better future development, more than 80% of the interviewed companies have begun to use more environmentally friendly and high-quality raw and auxiliary materials, and more than 60% of the interviewed companies have actively upgraded production equipment such as water-based coating lines. For furniture painting schemes, furniture companies pay the most attention to the performance and appearance of coatings, and believe that the performance of water-based coatings is the most important point in determining the success of the coating transformation ( 74%).

Some leading domestic furniture companies have already implemented coating upgrades first, and the active use of environmental coatings by leading companies will also drive the enthusiasm of the majority of small and medium-sized enterprises to switch to environmentally friendly coatings. More than 70% of the surveyed companies have achieved more than 50% of the use of environmentally friendly coatings. Among them, the number of companies using more than 75% of the environmentally friendly coatings has reached more than half of the total respondents. Nearly three-quarters of the interviewed companies indicated that they will further increase the use of environmentally friendly coatings. At present, the two-component water-based paint is the environmentally-friendly paint (42%) with the highest proportion of the interviewed furniture companies. Low odor, high hardness, scratch resistance, yellowing resistance, stain resistance, and high fullness are the main reasons why furniture companies choose two-component water-based paint. Especially for solid wood furniture, due to the particularity of its appearance design and material selection, the requirements for the coating process are also higher, especially for new high-performance environmentally friendly coatings such as two-component water-based paints.
